Fellowship Program

The clinical experience takes place in the operating rooms of California Pacific Medical Center’s Mission Bernal and Van Ness campuses, both state of the art and new facilities which opened in 2018. Outpatient surgery, to include outpatient joint replacement is at the Presidio Surgery Center. The fellow typically operates four days a week, and has one day for clinic and research, although this schedule is flexible depending on the desires of the fellow. The fellow works one on one with an attending mentor for all cases. The office call responsibility is approximately one night in every twelve.

The fellow is required to submit one research paper as first author to a peer reviewed journal. Typically, the fellow is involved in several projects throughout the year. Our clinic participates in an international database for shoulder arthroplasty, with thousands of patient entries over the last 15 years. There are basic science opportunities available through our industry partners, university alliances or grants, should the fellow desire to pursue that pathway. Journal Clubs take place in association with the shoulder and elbow community to include other private practice surgeons, as well as members of UCSF and Kaiser. Fellows are funded for one meeting of their choice, but also attend additional industry sponsored and local meetings. Involvement in professional sports orthopaedic care is available with Dr. Dickinson, the team orthopaedic surgeon of the Oakland A’s.

The fellowship remuneration is through California Pacific Orthopaedics, and includes full employee salary and benefits. Should the fellow desire, additional call and remuneration are available.

Most fellows live in the vibrant city of San Francisco, a world class destination with opportunities in virtually every athletic and cultural endeavor. In minutes one can be in a National Park network extending hundreds of miles, eating in a restaurant of any type, listening to a symphony, watching a professional baseball, basketball or football team, biking, hiking, sailing, or just enjoying the beauty of one of the most scenic cities in the world.

A California medical license is required. Interviews are highly encouraged, and typically include dinner on Sunday night and an office visit on Monday. Should the applicant desire, operating room exposure is welcomed.
